Plans Arent Wine, And They Dont Always Age Well
The following crossed my desk recently. The author gave me permission to share her story:
"Please alert people to something were experiencing right now - having to clean up the mess of someone not naming more than one person as beneficiary on a life insurance policy. We are having an impossible time trying to get the funeral expenses paid for my sister and my mother. They died within four days of each other, and they left each other as beneficiary of their life insurance policies.
If the person listed as a beneficiary dies, the insurance benefit goes into their estate.
The problem is, neither of them had a will, either."
Aside: This means that both estates, the mothers and the daughters, will have to be probated by the Court, and the Court will decide who gets what. The process can be lengthy, and it can be expensive. The family might not see the funeral money for a while.
"Also, please alert people to be sure that the person they choose to be their medical decision maker - the person who has Medical Power of Attorney - is willing to do what they would want done. Review the mental capacity of the appointed person regularly.
My 85 year old Mother couldnt bring herself to honor my sisters Living Will that said she wanted to be allowed to go. The doctor wouldnt write a letter stating Mother wasnt capable of making these decisions for my sister, who was in a coma.
So, my sister was put on life support, even though there was no hope that she would ever awaken or live a productive life. She lingered for months on a ventilator.
My family and I wish we had thought about all these things sooner. We are taking a closer look at our own papers now."
She is soooo right.
Life insurance is something we all tend to forget about. When you started that new job, you made out your employers insurance beneficiary papers on the first day. Have you thought about them since
What about your Medical and Financial Powers of Attorney you do have them, dont you. If youve designated your spouse on one or both, what happens if youre in an accident together Is there a secod person named who can step in
If you made arrangements for your children when they were babies, are there things you should change now thattheyre older Now that several years have gone by, would you still appoint the same people to care for your children in the event of a catastrophe
Do you have a will If not, some stranger in a black robe is going to be making decisions for you one day.
What about your parents If one of them has passed away, has the survivor made the necessary changes to legal documents
If one parent is in poor health or getting confused, is he or she still the only one legally appointed to make decisions for the other
This doesnt really have anything to do with your age. Everyone over the age of 18 should give some thought to these questions, and then take action. Should you do something about it right now, before something goes tragically wrong

Bush and Kerry Differ on Immigration Policies
Up until the final debate at Arizona State University, the issue of immigration had not been much discussed. Both presidential candidates know very well that illegal immigration is a hot button topic in our country, and each man is now trying to use it to his political advantage.Since the eighties the Democratic Party has, in general, supported immigrants and has been for fair and just immigration laws. However, there are those members of the party who claim that the presence of millions of undocumented immigrants undermines the bargaining power of the US born labor force. On the other side, the Republican Party traditionally has been against immigrants, but is increasingly reaching out to the Latino population. Advocates of free markets within the party have flat out called for the opening of the borders.
Identity Theft Shield
We live in an information-oriented society. Technology allows us to do business and make transactions literally in a matter of seconds. This abundance of information has given rise to a new crime - identity theft. In fact, according to a 2003 release from the Federal Trade Commission, almost 10 million people in the United States may be victimized by identity bandits each year.

Worldwide sales of Vioxx in 2003 were an estimated $2.5Billion and the drug was marketed in more than 80 countries around the world. This is one of several recent pharmaceutical products to have been put in the spotlight by both the national media and plaintiff lawyers.
The Right Focus on Tort Reform
The recent headlines about Mercks Vioxx withdrawal and the FDAs move to ban ephedra have brought a lot of media attention to the growing area of drug litigation.

Turnitin.com Infringes Upon Students Rights
Turnitin.com is undeniably an effective deterrent to plagiarism, but it is the very issue of copyright infringement that has people questioning the legality of the site. What many people dont understand is that works do not need to be registered to be copyrighted. Every literary work that is saved to a tangible medium this includes paper, computer disk, etc. is protected by federal copyright laws. Thus, the works submitted to Turnitin.com are copyrighted and the authors hold complete rights to the works. What the Turnitin.com system does, however, is it stores the submitted paper on their servers. This is done without the students permission. Turnitin.com is operating under the pretense that teachers will force their students to submit to Turnitin.com. Thus, student papers are stored in iParadigms the company that runs Turnitin.com database. This in itself is a blatant violation of the 1976 Federal Copyright Act. Turnitin.com is duplicating copyrighted material without the consent of the student. The student is forced to submit to the site, so submissions are not considered voluntary. In addition, the site does not ask for permission to store the paper, instead, it is done automatically.
Seatbelts: a Life Saver or a Taker
Seatbelts definitely save lives. Some of them have a locking feature which is truly amazing because you can pull it out all the way and let it pull back. You can also lock it and it’ll not slide out until its been pulled back all the way again. When you’re on a spirited drive, its good to have something to hold you into your seat as you take a tight turn at speed. Also, if you spend time cruising down the middle of the road, it’s better to have at least one seatbelt to comfort you.
Health Insurance Coverage
Health insurance is something that everyone needs today. The rising cost of visiting a health care provider or a hospital stay makes it imperative that everyone have some type of health care coverage. Government statistics estimate that over 40 million people in America are not covered by any type of health insurance on any given day. Thats an enormous number of people who really are taking a financial risk.
The Hidden Danger of the So-Called "Right to Die"
In October of 2003, the case of 39-year-old Terri Schiavo once again brought into focus the debate over the so-called "right to die." The Florida woman was temporarily removed from her feeding tube via a court order received by husband, but was put back on it a few days later when the Florida legislature authorized Governor Jeb Bush to issue a stay. As of this writing, her fate is still being debated in the courts and her case might now be headed for the U.S. Supreme Court. But I wonder if the right to die is something we really want I always shudder a bit when politicians start talking about giving me more rights. Rights have a funny way of morphing into obligations.
How to Talk to the Police if Your Suspected of a Crime
If you’re suspected of a crime, the police can come to your house or work or find you on the street to talk to you. Usually it will be a detective in plain clothes in an unmarked car who will want to talk to you. You might find a card from the detective under your door, or a message on your phone from him asking you to call.
The Hypocrisy of Insider Trading Laws
Perhaps Walter Williams and I are the only two people on earth who can see the hypocrisy of insider trading laws. I somehow doubt it, though. Williams wrote a column about a year ago, lambasting these laws and Im going to pick up where he left off. These laws run counter the notion we accept in every other aspect of society that life is unfair. In every facet of life, there are people who have access to advantages that others do not have. However, we dont attempt to make these advantages illegal except when it comes to insider trading.
Lawsuit Funding is essential to victims of personal injury who are without sufficient income and are awaiting a legal settlement. All too often a person is injured by the wrongful acts of another but must wait years to receive his or her fair compensation.
Identity Theft Scams

Getting the Necessary Paperwork Ready
A good grasp of the inner workings of disability claim benefits will significantly increase claimant’s chances of having his request approved. Understanding the procedures as well as the criteria used in evaluating your claims is a must if you want to receive the benefit you rightfully deserve. It is next to impossible to win at something when you do not know the rules that apply. Of course it will be a lot in favor of the opposing team if they alone know the regulations in effect. Consider this, if you are not aware of what should be done, you will never know if the rules that should be applied is being followed at all. Remember that the people making decisions that will affect you are only human and prone to make mistakes.
Personal Injury Lawyer
The history of the Personal Injury Lawyer is littered with interesting facts about the U.S. legal system and contingent fee based practices http://www.glofin.com. While many critics accuse trial lawyers of bringing frivolous lawsuits into the American legal system, nothing is farther from the truth.Personal Injury Lawyers advance their clients services and cash for case costs while funding companies like Global Financial 866-709-1100 advance cash to Plaintiffs against their pending settlements.Personal Injury Lawyers provide a valuable service to the American Justice system by working for a contingent fee which is only payable if there is recovery for their client. If there is no recovery for their client then the Personal Injury Lawyer will receive nothing and therefore these lawyers will only take cases that have merit. There is no advantage to the lawyer accepting a “frivolous lawsuit” because there is a high likelihood of no recovery and therefore no fee to the lawyer.
The New Drug Recall Lawyers
Given the monstrous size and profitability of drug companies, some plaintiff lawyers are considering focusing more of their practice on drug litigation. In fact, shortly after Mercks announcement of the Vioxx recall, some large plaintiff firms started aggressive media campaigns aimed at bringing in prescription drug injury victims. The media blitz has been non stop. Billboards, TV, web marketing, radio, and direct mail are just some of the marketing vehicles that attorneys have used to try and find new cases for them to work on.Many plaintiff law firms are no longer focusing on chasing run of the mill car accidents. Some of them have gone so far as to reposition themselves as “drug recall lawyers,” seeing that the future of their practice may be shaped by the initial outcome of these new pharmaceutical cases.
Time for a New Canadian Party
It is time for a change. A change in philosophy, a change in the 3 party system. A change in politicians not being held accountable for promises they had no intention of delivering. It is time for a new political party to emerge from the sham that is the Canadian so-called democratic system. Here are some of the changes I propose a new party based on the following positions:
What You Shouldn’t Believe About SSD
The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are the largest of several Federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities.American citizens have come to be aware that with the Social Security programs for disability benefits and SSI, security is still there for them, even as they are physically restricted, burdened with an illness and unable to work anymore.
