Before & After: A New Look at New Years Resolutions
Have you seen the ditty below that's roaming the Internet these days? Before you read it and fall for its 'humor,' consider this. Each year, thousands, even millions, of people engage in an after-the-holidays ritual of self-denigration and punishment ? to make up for the pleasurable indulgence of a very special time of year. It's 'funny' to most of us to read about it, as in the poem below, but if we take a closer look, we can see how the 'humor' perpetuates an approach to living that's not really about taking care of yourself.
So a word from body positive expert Deb Burgard, PhD, "Be kind to your body this year, and give it nourishment, pleasure, movement, sex, medical help, comfortable clothes, respect, safety, rest. Try not to let it go too long being hungry or make it uncomfortably full. Protest the body-denigrating inner (and outer) talk. Don't wait to love your body to do loving things, because it is in the doing that you come to love it."
And think about ending this verse with a different twist, shown below and written by Dr. Jill S.Welbourne, a patron of the United Kingdom's Eating Disorder Association.
Important: Read through to the 'after' part or you'll get the wrong message!
'Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the house, nothing would fit me, not even a blouse!
The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste at the holiday parties have gone to my waist.
When I got on the scales, there arose such a number! When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber)
I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared, the gravies and sauces, and beef nicely rared, the wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese, and the way I'd never said, "No thank you, please."
As I dressed myself, in my husband's old shirt, and prepared once again to do battle with dirt, I said to myself, as only I can, "You can spend the winter disguised as a man!"
So away with the last of the sour cream dip. Get rid of the fruitcake, every cracker and chip! Every last bit of food that I like must be banished 'til all the additional ounces have vanished.
I won't have a cookie, not even a lick. I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick. I won't have hot biscuits, or cornbread, or pie; I'll munch on a carrot, and quietly cry!
I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore ? but isn't that what January is for?
Unable to giggle, no longer a riot, Happy New Year to all, and to all a good DIET!!!!!!!!!
Hey, what am I thinking? That's really old hat! A 'dieting' mind-set will just make me fat.
So away with restriction! I'll eat what I want. I'll start when I'm hungry and stop when I'm not.
May all my friends join me in this state of mind. For then we'll be happy, creative, and kind.
Wishing a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

Diets May Have Long Term Side Effects...Do You Know What They Are?
To see the "low carb" diets on the way out is a somewhat reflective process, not that I was an advocate of ketogenic diets at all unless you have Adolescent Epilepsy, but bringing the "low carb or ketogenic diet" into the forefront of our American Society meant that more people were being educated about obesity, food and eating. This acknowledgment about food was astounding and became overwhelming , causing restaurant chains and some farmers to really suffer from these trendy diets, people have lost farms that have been in their families for years , businesses that lend job and economic stability to an area, have gone out of business or lost business, all on a dietary whim, with no research done on the side-effects of "not eating" what these diets restrict.

Dieting? You Must Reset Your Weight-o-stat
You need to reset your weight-o-stat. No matter how much you exercise and diet, if you don't reset your weight-o-stat, you will often go back to your pre-set weight. It is like your home. If the thermostat is set on 72 and you open a window, the temperature might change for a bit, but the thermostat will kick in and bring the temperature back to normal. Until you change the setting it will be 72 in the house. Until you change the setting of your weight-o-stat, you will not be slim.

When Cellulite Attacks!
Cellulite is a recent addition to the English language. In fact, it is not a medical term at all. It's a term used to describe the way your body appears when adipose tissue forms lobular formations just under the surface of the skin. In plain English the "cottage cheese look" or dimpling that occurs primarily on your thighs, legs and buttocks is a type of fatty tissue.

Was The Ephedra Ban Really a Success?
Ephedra and Ephedrine consumers are still under the assumption that the Ephedra ban is still in place. It probably comes as a great surprise that the ban on Ephedra, one of nature's most powerful weight loss supplements, was lifted in April of 2005. A Utah Judge overturned the FDA's decision. So why is it that the most sought after diet pill so difficult to get your hands on? We spoke to four of the top nutritional suppliers. They tell us that the demand is higher than ever. However, they admit they haven't been following the new ruling. As a result, they missed the boat.

The first rule for successful weight loss and weight maintenance after Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) is Protein First ? that means eating protein for three daily meals, and protein must be 50 percent of food intake. Some bariatric centers advise as much as 70 grams of protein a day. The gastric bypass diet should be high-protein, low-carbohydrate and low-volume. This is what successful WLS patients will eat for the rest of their life if they wish to maintain weight loss after surgery.

Weight Loss Doesnt Work
Your brain has this really interesting system that is kind of like a search engine on the internet. It is called your RAS for short. A search engine works by typing what you want to find into it and then it goes out on the internet and finds the most relevant web sites for what you want. Your RAS works the same. You put something into your RAS and your brain will literally go out into the world and search for exactly that.
When Emotional Eating Becomes an Eating Disorder
More and more people are starting to recognize that they eat in response to emotions and moods. It makes perfect sense! We are subconsciously conditioned that food makes us feel good. From the time we put our favorite foods in our mouth we get an immediate feel good endorphin release and then to top it off we also can get a feel good serotonin surge. There is no doubt about it, food feels good.
Obesity in America -- The Growing Epidemic!
Obesity is a disease that affects approximately 60 million people in the United States, where women are especially affected. Over one-third of women between the ages of 20 and 74 are obese, the majority of them being African American or Mexican American. With more and more pre-packaged food and less and less activity, the number of obese people in America has steadily increased since the 1960's.
