Be the King of Your Domain

Scott Foreman

So there you are. You’ve got a topic that you really love. You’ve done your research. You’re ready to start your new website. As good as it is, you’re certain to get traffic and tons of sales. All you need to do now is register a domain name and start designing the site to end all sites!

The only problem is, what do you call your site

It seems like such a throwaway decision. But stop for just a second to think about how important that simple, little name will be.

Some handy things to keep in mind…

  1. You want traffic. That means, you’ve got to get ranked high in the search engines. Determine what keywords, or keyword phrases people will type into their browser to find your site. Use those terms often. You may even want to use the best phrase in your domain name.

  2. KISS. Keep It Simple Silly. Make sure your name is one that people can remember. Most people will only ask for the name once, then they move on.

  3. Keep the spelling easy. I’ve spent my entire life trying to figure out how to spell receive and I’m still no good at it. Don’t make people have to look up a word just to get to your site. www.we-make-watches.com is miles better than www.impeccable-chronographs.com

  4. Use dot COM. The .com domain extension is so common that it’s almost crazy to use anything else. If a searcher doesn’t know, he/she will assume .com. Don’t send them to your competitor.

  5. Keep it legible. If your domain name has more than two words, use dashes - to separate the words. If the name is two words or less you can just mash the words together. Good: www.healthy-breakfast-cereals.com. Not-so-Good: www.healthybreakfastcereals.com

When you’re researching where to register your domain name there are many, many sites that can do so for you. One of our favorite free research tools not only tells you if your name is available, but also gives a ton of suggestions for alternate choices. While we’ve just scratched the surface of domain names, you can get tremendously helpful info on not only web site names, but search engine optimization, web site creation, and niche identification at one of our all time favorite sites here: http://www.build-passive-income.com/cmd.phpad=119425

Don’t create another website without carefully weighing the importance of the name you supply. The time and effort you use to come up with a compelling name will be easily recouped in added traffic and increased sales.

Remember, be good to yourself and never underestimate the power associated with the intensity of your passion.
