Borderline Division 1 How To Make ItHugh Breland As a former NCAA Division 1 Athlete, I have parents ask me quite often what their son or daughter needs to do in order to make it to the highest level of college athletics. First, mom and dad need to know where they fit in the equation to success. Parents cannot be the primary motivator. If a kid is not self-motivated to be on the field or in the gym early and often, I would say he does not have what it takes. No matter how hard a parent pushes, kids will ultimately change only if their heart is committed. A parent must be the primary encourager, not a micro-managing know-it-all. Too many parents try to implement their own agendas in their child’s lives as opposed to providing guidelines, guardrails, and “good-jobs” along the way. Second, if you are a “borderline athlete” – not one of the top players in the nation being recruited by the top schools – then you must focus on nutrition and training to engrain. High sugar & high fat diets are not going to help you get that extra burst of quickness that you need to beat your competition. Do not be fooled by the professional athlete on a McDonalds commercial, even professional athletes follow a strictly regimented diet. Oddly enough, you will see some college athletes with horrible diets. Again don’t be deceived; these individuals and their teams do not compete for championships. Eating right is followed by training right. Training to engrain is simply training the brain. By performing the correct sport-specific moves, positions, and exercises day in and day out, your brain will automatically react & execute in game situations. Too many athletes waste their training time doing the wrong exercises the wrong way. Lastly, you must give your all but not your life. In order to truly “make it” in life, you must put NCAA Division 1 in its proper place. Remember that you are in control and that it is not appropriate for sport to control you. Keep in mind, productive relationships, education, and having a positive impact on your community are top priorities. Do not let being an athlete define you, rather focus on being yourself, learn from your mistakes, and execute as best you can. Timing and teams-needs will play a major role in where you end up, so control what’s in your court and don’t stress over the rest.

A move to a new city, getting settled in a new home, meeting new friends and colleagues, exploring a new area and learning a new language have marked many new opportunities. It has been an exciting adventure and a time that I have enjoyed very much. It has also been a tremendous learning experience and has challenged me in ways Id never dreamed of when I began this journey. Following are four tips that have helped me during this time and that I hope will help you navigate more confidently and successfully as you set sail. Is Citrus Aurantium really bad for your health Once again the “wisdom” of the FDA and the supplement hating Academia and the out of control trial lawyers - have gotten it wrong. Is Your Ability to Buy Dietary Supplements, Herbal Preparations, and Tonics in Jeopardy in the USA When the DSHEA Dietary Supplement Health Education Act was passed by the USA Congress in 1994 it was a boon to all of us consumers. Finally, we all could buy herbals that had long histories of safe and effective use throughout the world. Before the DSHEA we were unable to get them, much less even educate ourselves about them. This was because the FDA was stopping education on them, and their actual manufacture supposedly for "Our" protection. Media Musings I was watching television the other night and was jolted from the commentary, which incidentally was on the World Athletics Championships in Paris, by a series of rather ill-timed commercial interruptions. It was really amazing how one minute Id be totally engrossed by the one hundred metres and all the nonsense of the false start rulings and such and then, just as I was getting quite into the whole thing, bang! On comes some totally incongruous advert about goodness knows what, cutting right across the commentator in mid-sentence. Real class and so respectful of the athletes years of dedication! And, as this was repeated throughout the night, I came to realize that "its not about the sport, stupid" its about the money and the television revenues. The sport is just something that goes in between the ads. You Don’t Have to Live With Stiff Neck Pain Getting quality sleep has, for many, become an elusive goal in the modern day. We work longer hours, take less time off, and try to overcompensate by micromanaging what little free time is available to in order to enjoy all facets of our lives. More and more of us are becoming aware that we are fatigued, and this is further exaggerated by the countless advertisements and commercials that discuss the number of Americans who are not getting good sleep. Many of us wake up daily with sore muscles and stiff necks. Nothing is more tiresome than the combination of exhaustion and neck pain. ![]() |
